Q 1 - What is the significant difference between the previous Certification Program and the recently released Enhanced Certification Program?

Answer: The enhanced Certification Program now allows members who perform specific and specialized job functions like sewage systems, plumbing, HVAC, structural or fire protection only to apply in their area of practice only and receive their CBCO designation.

Q 2 - The Post Secondary Education requirement is a Diploma from a 3 year program in building design or construction. Would a Master Plumber’s licence and experience count?

Answer: The minimum requirement to obtain CERTIFICATION is a 3 year diploma in a field of building design, building science, or building construction. A person with a trade Certificate of Qualification may apply to the Certification Evaluation Committee (CEC) for an evaluation of Prior Learning Assessment. The CEC will review the application and make a recommendation of equivalency or advise if additional requirements are required to complete any deficiencies identified by a gap analysis.

Q 3 - The Post Secondary Education requirement is a Diploma from a 3 year program in building design or construction. Would a 2 year Diploma count?

Answer: Similar to the above response, a person with a 2 year diploma may apply to the Certification Evaluation Committee (CEC) for an evaluation of Prior Learning Assessment.

Q 4 - Who is the Administrator stream geared toward and what is the course for it?

Answer: The Administrator stream was added to provide an avenue for a CBO who acts in an administrative capacity and has not taken any technical courses or written any MMAH exams other than the CBO Legal. The courses listed under Education – Technical Skills are “Community Planning & Zoning Administration” and “Legal Processes for Building Officials & Designers – 2012.”

Q 5 - Does a person have to take the course listed under “Education – Technical Skills” in order to apply for CERTIFICATION even though they have challenged and passed the MMAH exam?

Answer: Yes. The MMAH exam is the minimum requirement for QUALIFICATION. For CERTIFICATION, as a “Step Above,” there is an element of Education and Experience required over and above the Ministry baseline of Examination. Even an experienced person taking a technical training course will acquire additional knowledge to take away. A person with CBCO demonstrates a balance of the 3E’s; Examination, Education and Experience.

Q 6 - Can a person who has a BCQ designation and is a Government Member still apply for a CBCO designation upgrade under the 2013 program?

Answer: Yes. Members previously designated as BCQ under the 2013 Certification Program may still apply for CBCO designation under the previous program. There is no deadline for this application.

Q 7 - Does a person who received Advanced Standing in House and Small Buildings have to pass the Small Building exam to apply for the Small Building stream?

Answer: No. Advanced Standing granted by the MMAH in a category of qualification is the equivalent of having written the exam for the purposes of CERTIFICATION.
