This year's tour will focus on wind power generation. Already home to the mighty Niagara Falls, perhaps the 'greenest' generator of power in the country, over the last number of years the Niagara Region has become home to many emerging 'green energy' production facilities. Several facilities have begun production of wind turbine components such as turbines, towers and the turbine blades. PowerBlades Industries Inc. is dedicated to producing the enormous blades. Their plant in Welland, Ontario produces blades nearly 150 feet long! And we're going to see how they are made!
Some background on PowerBlades Industries Inc. and their parent company Senvion Canada Inc.:
Is the Canadian subsidiary of the German turbine manufacturer Senvion Canada Inc. Founded in 2007, Senvion Canada Inc. is based in Montreal, Quebec with a sales office in Toronto, Ontario and Vancouver.
Designed for cold climates-Senvion turbines in Canada - In Canada, the two megawatt Senvion MM turbines designed for cold climates have known tremendous success. That said, Senvion concluded a framework agreement with EDF Canada as a result of a public call for tender issued by Hydro-Quebec. It envisions the delivery of Senvion wind turbines totaling 954 MW of installed power destined for five Quebec wind farms. The wind farms will be located both on the north and south side of the St. Lawrence River. Further contracts were concluded with regard to several community projects totaling about 100 MW of installed power. They will be located in the regional county municipalities of Riviere-du-Loup, La Mitis, Le Granit and Pierre-de Saurel. Towers, blades and electric converters will be supplied by factories in Matane, Gaspe and New Richmond.
First contracts in Ontario - With the signing of the first contracts for wind farms in the Oshawa region, Senvion SE entered the Ontario market in 2011. The company will collaborate with local partners on the construction of wind turbine components.
In December 2012, Senvion SE signed six additional contracts for wind farms in Southern Ontario. With the signing, the company decided to invest in a blade factory within the province. The facility, operating as PowerBlades Inc., is located in Welland and will allow us to generate a high level of local content and cement our dedication to Ontario.
PowerBlades will be the first blade factory in North America owned by Senvion. It will produce the 45 meter long Senvion blades for the MM92 CCV, our best-selling turbine. In a next stage, the facility will increase its capacity in order to begin producing blades for a new 3 MW wind turbine, fit for the Ontario market. These productions will create numerous qualified, long-term jobs in the region.

B.Sc., President of Termobuild Canada - This session reveals simple and instantly rewarding sustainable initiatives that can be implemented to heat and cool buildings using basic off-the-shelf pre-cast products and HVAC equipment.
This solution demonstrates how to position for new developments beyond LEED with low energy or net zero/intelligent buildings critical in attaining enhanced market appeal and competitive advantage.
The presentation will deliver the most up-to-the-minute status and outlook on how supercharged thermal storage works in real Canadian projects and how alternative energy technologies linked to pre-cast structures are most likely to capture significant green market share.
This is your chance to learn from industry expert on how to take advantage of today's "high performance" standards and position for new developments already on the horizon with low energy buildings, and more.

"Bigger" is not necessarily "better" in today's energy efficient homes.
On January 1st 2015 the OBC will allow HVAC Load Calculations to be done applying the NEW CSA F280-2012. The standard supports the right-sizing of mechanical systems by acknowledging air tightness, ventilation and associated heat recovery, updated below grade and window thermal performance data and several other key changes.
